The High Technology Development
Corporation (HTDC) awarded a contract to Concurrent Technologies Corporation
(CTC) through
theHawaii Center
for Advanced Transportation Technologies (HCATT) program to convert an electric
pickup truck into a fuel cell augmented flightline maintenance support vehicle
for demonstration and performance evaluation at Hickam Air Force Base (HAFB) in
Honolulu, Hawaii.
To fulfill the obligations of
this contract award, CTC purchased a 2000 Electric Ford Ranger as the
demonstration platform. A proton
exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell will be integrated into this platform to
provide auxiliary power and to provide power to the original equipment
manufacturer (OEM) traction motor and battery pack for range extension. The on-board compressed hydrogen storage
will power the fuel cell and will be compatible with the existing hydrogen
infrastructure at HAFB. Upon
completion of system integration, the vehicle will be demonstrated at HAFB for a
period of 12 months. The
demonstration is scheduled to commence in April of 2008.
